A BRIEF PICKLEBALL HISTORY

The genesis of Pickleball 12 traces back to a casual evening in late 2022 at a local community center. There, Frank White the future founder, captivated by the lively scene on the pickleball courts, found himself unexpectedly drawn into the game. Donning running shoes, he accepted a paddle and a pickleball from a friendly woman. Stepping onto the court somewhat reluctantly, a few dinks and volleys later, he was undeniably hooked. The sport felt peculiar yet undeniably enjoyable.

This newfound passion belonged to Frank, a retired California Police Officer with an impressive 29-year career in law enforcement. During his later years on the force, he honed his skills in developing others, training experienced officers to become effective Field Training Officers and authoring two comprehensive training manuals. His dedication to mentorship was evident as he personally guided over 50 police reserves and newly graduated academy officers in their months of street training.

A lifelong athlete, Frank’s inherent athleticism proved invaluable during his initial foray into the world of pickleball. However, his commitment to sports extended beyond his professional life. In November 2023, a significant setback occurred when he completely ruptured his Achilles tendon, leading to five months of navigating life on a knee scooter and undergoing surgery and physical therapy. Undeterred, this obstacle became an unexpected opportunity. Confined to his scooter, he diligently practiced serves, volleys, and groundstrokes, realizing the critical importance of focused practice, a facet he had overlooked in his first year of recreational play.

A seasoned veteran of ping pong and a 35-year tennis enthusiast, he transitioned into a devoted pickleball player with a clear mission: to share his enthusiasm, knowledge, and instructional abilities with others. Once mobile again, other beginner and intermediate players observed his dedicated practice sessions and joined in. They were astounded by his insights and the rapid improvements they experienced under his guidance. Compliments from other players became commonplace, and he himself witnessed the joy and satisfaction of those he trained.

A cornerstone of his practice routine is Ed, a remarkable 96-year-old man. This invaluable partner consistently appears three times a week, a veritable human ball machine always ready to deliver any shot required to help players refine their weaknesses and execute drills. This exemplifies the unique appeal of pickleball – a sport that is not only fun and social but also competitive, easy to learn, accessible, fosters a strong sense of community, and provides an exceptional workout with numerous health and wellness benefits. In essence, pickleball transcends mere sport, a profound realization that ultimately led to the creation of Pickleball 12.

About Beginner

Beginner Rating 1.0-3.49

Your paddle is key. Choose one with a balance of power, control, and spin – a good beginner option costs around $99. For extra reach or two-handed play, consider a longer handle.
Footwork is essential. Ditch the running shoes! Opt for pickleball, tennis, or court shoes designed for the side-to-side movements pickleball demands. You'll be dominating the court in no time!

About Intermediate

Intermediate Rating 3.5-4.49

Pickleball isn't about brute force. While blasting the ball might seem tempting. Focus on control and "high percentage shots." These are shots with a lower risk of error, keeping the ball in play and frustrating your opponent.

Think strategically! Don't favor your forehand - develop a well-rounded backhand and master those "off" shots. This unpredictability keeps your opponent guessing and gives you the upper hand.

About Advance

Advance Rating 4.5+

Advance players know power isn't everything. Patience is a pickleball superpower. They wait for their opponent to over cook a shot, then capitalize on the weakness. This approach takes focus and discipline, honed through drills that keep them sharp. It's a game of chess. not checkers. By disguising their shots and staying calm, they outsmart their opponents, proving that patience truly is a winning strategy.
